The Twentieth Century up to 1945


1. Setting the scene
  • In 1900 the economy of Britain had become mostly industrial.
  • In 1911 the majority of people from the country lived in cities.
  • During this peiod The British Empire had many colonies but they began to rebel and British control of them began to disappear.
Many important things took place:
  • The First World War (1914-18). Millions of soldiers died and it made people change their view of the world. Religious and political beliefs were questioned.
  • Comunism grew in Russia.
  • Fascism grew in Germany and Italy.
  • Germany became a powerful nation with fascists beliefs.
  • The Second World War ( 1939-45).
  • Workers in industries joined trades unions, the British labour party grew and women were allowed to vote for the first time in 1928.

In the arts, some artists felt that they had to express their ideas in a simple and popular way whereas some others felt that they had to do it differenty and in new forms : two literary movements during the 20th century: Realism and Modernism.
